Psalm 147: The Lord Takes Pleasure in His People

What I am about to READ
  • Psalm 147 is a beautiful poem and hymn contrasting the Lord’s great power with His great mercy.

MARK

  • Watch for these two things when you read this Psalm:
    • The Lord’s strength seen in creation
    • The Lord’s mercy seen in redemption
  • These two themes intertwine to give us a wonderful Psalm of comfort. We are tempted to think the Lord’s power is our destruction, but He does not use His power against us, but against our sin, and is, to us, a compassionate Lord.

LEARN

  • The Lord has counted the stars and named them (4), He causes the grass to grow and feeds the beasts (8-9), and this strength is the strength of His Word (19-20) which goes forth to the saving of His people (15-18).
  • The more times I read this Psalm, the more wonder I see.

MEDITATE

  • “The Lord lifts up the humble; he casts the wicked to the ground.” (147:6) This beautiful verse is a marvelous echo of the great theme of Hannah and Mary. The Lord, by Law and Gospel, turns things upside-down, the humble are lifted up, and the proud are brought low.

  • Here is another fantastic verse of comfort (this Psalm is full of them): “…theLord takes pleasure in those who fear him,in those who hope in his steadfast love” (147:11). It is a great comfort to know that the Lord takes pleasure is us! This is a beautiful verse of justification by faith.
