Psalm 8 – How Majestic is Your Name

(9 verses, :30 to read)

What I am about to READ

  • This psalm of David glorifies God in his created order.

  • The strength and glory of God is certainly manifest in the things that are created, “the heavens…the moon and the stars” (vs. 3) but interestingly in this psalm it is in the seemingly weak things that God’s strength is most clearly shown – “out of the mouths of babes and sucklings you have established strength…” (vs. 2).
  • No more is this clearly shown in the seeming weakness of the creche, cross, and sacraments.  For here God shows himself weakly, as a child, as a powerless criminal, as bread, water, and wine.  Yet in these ways he is mighty to save.  The testimony of those simple people and infants bring down even the rulers from their thrones for they preach peace and the glory of God.
  • Mankind is crowned with glory and honor by God.  Man is the very crown of God’s creation after all, the last of his created things (Gen 1).  David praises God for giving to man dominion, that is, power and authority over the created order.

Lord Jesus, even though you are the holy and almighty Lord you have revealed yourself as the lowly child of Bethlehem.  Help us by faith to always be trusting children, that the lowliness of our testimony that you have prepared would glorify your name. Amen.
