What I am about to READ
Peter and John witness to the council, the believers pray for boldness, and a description of the early believing community.
MARK and LEARN
Peter and John go before the very people who crucified Jesus and speak boldly to them about Jesus and the resurrection. This sort of boldness in the face of such danger was none other than the work of the Holy Spirit.
Peter, John and the greater community of faith prayed to God for the boldness that they just had experienced before Annas and Caiaphas. In the face of persecution and possible martyrdom, the early believers staked everything they had on the promises of Jesus.
This is evident also in how easily the early church gave up posessions and property. It was certainly an act of benevolence brought on by the Holy Spirit, but it also shows how loosely the early beleivers held their livelihood, yes, even their own lives given the blessings of Jesus death and resurrection for them.
Lord Jesus, the early believers staked everything they had and were on the testimony of your resurrection from the dead. Yet, Lord I find my own belief sometimes cold and wanting. Give to me that sure and certain hope, rooted in your word that I will not die but shall yet live because you have died and lived again for me. In your name, Amen.
