Psalm 117: The Shortest Psalm Praises the Lord

READ & LISTEN

(2 verses, 00:10 to read)

What I am about to READ

A Psalm of praise for the steadfast love and faithfulness of the Lord.

MARK

  • 1: ALL people – praise the Lord.
  • 2: The Lord is to be praised for His steadfast love and faithfulness.

LEARN

Two verses! This psalm is surprisingly brief, yet packed with rich theology. The psalm begins by addressing ALL nations, ALL nationalities, ALL ethnicities, ALL people. Not only are the Israelites called to remember all the wonderful saving works of the Lord; this call goes out to the Gentiles as well. As God’s chosen people, set apart by God, Israel was to proclaim the true God to its heathen/Gentile neighbors. Thus, Paul cites this psalm in Romans 15:11 in order to show that it was always God’s plan that Gentiles hear the Good News of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness and come to faith in Christ.

MEDITATE

This short psalm is great for prayer and memorization. It ought to give us hope and strength as we live out our lives. A sinner can never hear these words enough: “For great is His steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.”
