Psalm 45: Praise to the Messiah, the King

(17 verses, 2:01 to read)

What I am about to READ
  • This Psalm is a song of praise to the Messiah, especially according to office of king.

MARK

  • The Psalm is an astonishing hymn of praise to the Messiah, the Son of David, who will sit on the throne forever (45:6).
  • The outline (with interpretation) is thus:
    • 1, Introduction to the Psalm, dedication to the Messiah
    • 2-3, The beautiful gracefulness, eternal blessedness, and power of the Messiah extolled.
    • 4-5, The Messiah goes forth for truth, meekness, and righteousness, and defeats the devil.
    • 6-9, The eternal coronation of the Messiah, marked by His bearing the Holy Spirit (the oil of gladness) in full measure
    • 10-12, A call to the people to join the church, the kingdom of the Messiah
    • 13-15, The beauty of the church extolled.
    • 16-17, Conclusion, the Church of the New Testament is spread throughout the world.

LEARN

  • 45:7 speaks of the Messiah’s anointing, that Jesus bore the Holy Spirit in full measure. This is one of the importance but neglected themes of the Scriptures, and Isaiah (in this Servant Songs, and elsewhere) loves to teach the Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit.

MEDITATE

  •  This Psalm teaches us to pray, “Thy kingdom come.”
