(26 verses, 2:51 to read)
What I am about to READ
A prayer for deliverance which trusts in God because of the promises which he has given in the past and because of the past deeds God has accomplished for his people.
MARK and LEARN
1-8 God has helped his people in days of old
9-16 God hides himself
17-22 God’s people confess their cause to be just
23-26 Prayer to God for deliverance
The psalmist appeals to God because of his track record of helping his saints. God’s ways are not understood and it often appears as if God is hiding himself or is altogether absent, but that does not stop the faithful from pleading with God for mercy.
MEDITATE
God sometimes is, as Luther said, “a God who hides himself.” When things do not look as if any good can come of it, and we wonder where God is in the midst of suffering we can take comfort in the fact that God does work together for the good for those who love him. He does not leave us in our suffering but redeems our suffering in his cross. He gives us words like psalm 44 to entreat and petition him for deliverance even when he hides himself “redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!”
