MATTHEW 1: The Genealogy and Birth of Jesus

(25 verses, 3:36 to read)

What I’m about to READ

  • Matthew begins his Gospel with the genealogy of Jesus, and a brief account of His birth.

  • Here is the outline:
    • 1-17, The Genealogy of Jesus
      • 1-6, From Abraham to David
      • 7-11, From David to the Babylonian Captivity
      • 12-17, From the captivity to Jesus
      • 18-25, The Nativity of Jesus

  • More than any of the other Gospels, Matthew in connecting Jesus to the Old Testament people and promises. The genealogy shows this, as well as the quotation of Isaiah 7 in verse 23.
  • This chapter emphasizes the names of Jesus. First, Immanuel, which means God with us, and teaches us about the incarnation, the Jesus is pleased to dwell with us. The second is Jesus, which means “the Lord saves,” and emphasizes the work of the Lord’s death and resurrection for us.
  • We also are given the faithful example of Joseph, who delights in believing God’s word, and acts with kindness toward Mary.

Heavenly Father, we give thanks to You for the birth of Your Son, God with us, our Savior Jesus. Give us Your Holy Spirit, so that we would always trust and rejoice in Him. Amen.
