Amos 6: Woe to the Complacent

LISTEN | READ

(14 verses, 2:22 to read)

What I am about to READ:

The Lord continues to warn Judah and Israel of His wrath and impending judgment. Repent!

MARK & LEARN

1-7: This is a picture of the life of the wealthy Israelites in the last years of the Northern Kingdom.

6: “Joseph” (the Northern Kingdom, which included the tribes of Joseph’s sons Ephraim and Manasseh) was ruined, that is, morally rotten and ruined because of decay from within.

8, 11, 14: The Lord is the cause of all the destruction Israel will experience at the hands of the Assyrians. He is the judge. For this reason, Israel should return to the Lord and seek His grace.

12: Israel is like unthinking farmer who plows on rocks or like a horseman who wants to gallop on rocky crags. In other words, Israel has tried to find blessings by its own power instead of depending on the Lord.

MEDITATE

All that we have is a gift from God. We are called to be content with the earthly gifts God has bestowed upon us. But we must never fall into a false sense of security – trusting in created things over the Creator. This chapter describes the Israelites as they abandoned the Creator, the Lord God Almighty, in favor of their own power, might, and creature comforts. The Lord warns them yet again, “REPENT! Turn away from your sins, and return to the Lord.” In His good and holy Law, the Lord continues to warn us today. Repent! Trust in God alone! Turn to the Lord and receive forgiveness for all your wayward transgressions. In His Gospel, all your sins are forgiven on account of Christ’s death and resurrection.
