What I am about to READ

  • Psalm 135 is a sermon and prayer of praise to God. The Lord is praised for His power and His goodness.

MARK

  • 1-4, Introduction to the Psalm, call to praise the Lord
  • 5-7, The Lord does what He wants, His power demonstrated in creation
  • 8-12, The Lord’s power was demonstrated by the Exodus from Egypt
  • 13-14, A prayer to the Lord for demonstrating His power in Law and Gospel!
  • 15-18, A sermon on the uselessness of idols
  • 19-21, Conclusion, the call to bless the Lord

LEARN

  • v. 5 puts the true Lord “above all gods.” There is only one God, but multitudes of false gods. This Psalm, then, is a meditation on the First Commandment.
  • Note that while v 5-7 praise the Lord for His power, v 8-12 are about the Lords *saving* power, and these are teh verses that culminate in the doxology of 13-14.
  • The sermon on idols (15-18) reminds us of Psalm 115 and the preaching of the Isaiah.
  • The call for a triple-blessing (19-20) reminds us of the Aaronic Benediction (Numbers 6:22f) and reminds us that the people of Israel prayed to the Holy Trinity.

MEDITATE

  • O Lord, I thank You that Your power is demonstrated in winning my salvation. Continue to cause Your kingdom to come among us so that all false worship and false gods would come to nothing, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
